What is a Ministry Team?

A Ministry Team is a small group of Jesus followers with complementary skills, who are committed to common purposes, performance goals, and approaches for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.  These teams work together, break bread together, and, of course, have fun together! Doing ministry in teams has shown to be effective not only at accomplishing the team goals, but also in nurturing a strong sense of community. Some teams have long-term goals and work together for extended time periods, others have a short-term goal and the team moves on once the goal is accomplished.

Church Landscaping

This team of gardeners  works to create an outside impression of GUMchurch that reflects the welcoming and open nature that one will find when they come inside . Each Tuesday morning in spring and summer this team plants flowers, trims shrubs and pulls weeds to keep the outside of GUM looking great! The team would love to have others to join them in this fun ‘radical hospitality’ project. Call the church office at 669.0730 or click here to request more info!

Church & Society

Church and Society’s prime mission is to seek the implementation of the United Methodist Social Principles. The team carries  this out through a program of education, witness and action.

Examples of the work of this team include:

  • Hosting a forum to discuss Same-Sex Relationships and the Church
  • Providing education to the church community on immigration issues
  • Working to introduce holy conferencing, a system for dialogue where tough issues can be discussed in a civil and respectful manner.

Festival of the Arts Waffle Cone Ice Cream Booth

Keep watching for Festival dates in June 2017

Then be sure to sign up to help out with the ice cream booth at Festival. This important  church fundraiser has many roles and many spots to fill and can’t be accomplished without many, many hands!

Hospitality & Guest Services

This ministry team actively works toward making GUMchurch as welcoming as possible.

The call to practice Radical Hospitality is fostered in  an active desire to invite, welcome, receive, and care for those who are strangers so that they find a spiritual home and discover for themselves the unending richness of life in community with others who are following Jesus.

Radical is an adjective intentionally chosen as it describes that which is drastically different from ordinary practices, outside the normal, that which exceeds expectations and goes the second mile.

Memorial Garden

The Memorial Garden is a place of peace, a place of memory, a place of meditation, and a place of prayer.

The Memorial Garden was established in 2004 as a long-lasting tribute to those that have passed away. All donations received are used for the care and maintenance of the area.

More information is available by calling the church office at 669.0730 or clicking here to request info.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

This group of dedicated knitters and crocheters meets in the GUM Library at 1pm on the 4th Thursday of each month.  At each meeting, the group shares the shawls they have worked on during the month, to pray for those receiving the shawls and to determine if there are any other needs. This group also sets aside two dates per year for a luncheon and fellowship.

Teddy Bear Ministry

The Teddy Bear Ministry is an opportunity for our church family to show the love of Jesus to others during a difficult time, an occasion for celebration or just as an act of friendship. The GUMchurch community uses this opportunity to practice radical hospitality, intentional faith development and extravagant generosity by sharing these bears.

The Ministry is self supporting due to the generosity of people donating bears. We receive no funding from the church and all expenses for ribbon are out of pocket.

These bears have been sent all around the Grand Rapids area and even shipped out of state. The notes of appreciation we receive keep us motivated. So, if you come across a teddy bear that needs a good home, drop it off at the church office and the Teddy Bear Team will do the rest.
